Upgrade to New Excel Version

OVERVIEW Our client requested a full upgrade of a complex Excel‑based application originally developed by Eppert Consulting in Excel 1997. Over time, the tool had become mission‑critical, but the underlying technology was outdated and incompatible with modern versions of Excel. We were commissioned to migrate the application first to Excel 2010 then to Excel 2016 and more recently to Office 365, ensuring full functionality, improved performance, and seamless operation within the new interface and technical environment. THE CHALLENGE Upgrading a legacy Excel 1997 application to modern Excel versions presented several significant challenges: - Replacing old‑style custom command bars with the modern Ribbon interface - Ensuring compatibility with Excel’s expanded worksheet capacity - Updating links, named ranges, and syntax to match new Excel standards - Resolving conditional formatting issues caused by version differences - Addressing performance losses introduced during the migration - Handling interface‑related changes and behavioural differences in Excel 2016 - Improving stability and performance for Office 365 The goal was to preserve all existing functionality while modernising the application and improving speed, stability, and usability. SOLUTION We performed a complete technical upgrade of the application, redesigning key components to align with Excel’s modern architecture. Custom command bars were replaced with Ribbon‑based controls using a combination of Excel VBA and XML — a technically challenging task that required innovative programming. All worksheets were extended to utilise Excel’s full capacity, and links, formulas, and named ranges were updated to comply with new syntax rules. During the migration, we identified and resolved conditional formatting issues and optimised performance, ultimately achieving faster execution speeds than the original version. The final upgrade to Office 365 included adjustments for interface changes, ironing out performance and stability problems and adaptation to stricter corporate security policies, while maintaining a smooth user experience. KEY TECHNICAL FEATURES Ribbon Interface Implementation: Replacement of legacy command bars with modern Ribbon controls using Excel VBA and XML. Worksheet Capacity Upgrade: Extension of spreadsheets to utilise Excel’s full row and column limits. Syntax Modernisation: Updating links, formulas, and named ranges to match Excel 2010/2016/Office 365 standards. Conditional Formatting Fixes: Resolution of formatting issues caused by version differences. Performance Optimisation: Addressing migration‑related slowdowns and achieving improved processing speeds. Excel 2016 Interface Adjustments: Handling new UI behaviours and compatibility issues introduced in the latest version. Developed in Excel VBA: Full upgrade performed using advanced Excel VBA techniques. IMPACT The upgraded application now operates reliably and efficiently in modern Excel environments. Users benefit from improved performance, an improved user interface, and full compatibility with Excel 2010 and 2016 and finally Office 365. The migration eliminated legacy limitations, enhanced usability, and ensured long‑term maintainability. Overall, the project delivered a modernised, faster, and more stable version of a critical business tool — without disrupting existing workflows.
