OVERVIEW Our client for this project is a German precision engineering company that required a specialised Excel‑based automation tool to streamline the processing of technical data files. The goal was to create a menu‑driven application capable of automatically reading multiple bespoke text files from a defined folder, translating their content into structured Excel data, and exporting the processed information into an additional output format. The result is a robust, efficient, and highly tailored solution built entirely in Excel VBA. THE CHALLENGE The company works with highly customised TXT data files generated by their engineering systems. These files vary in structure and content, and processing them manually was time‑consuming, error‑prone, and difficult to scale. The client needed a tool that could: - Automatically read all relevant files from specific folders - Interpret and translate bespoke TXT formats into structured Excel data - Apply consistent mapping rules for data translation - Export processed data into another required file format - Provide a simple, menu‑driven interface for non‑technical users - Ensure reliability and repeatability across large volumes of files The challenge was to design a flexible and intelligent import/export engine that could handle complex file structures while remaining easy to operate. SOLUTION We developed a custom Excel‑VBA application that automates the entire data import and translation process. The tool scans predefined folders, identifies valid files based on defined rules, reads their content, and converts the bespoke TXT format into structured Excel data using a configurable mapping table. A built‑in export module then generates output files in the required secondary format. The menu‑driven interface ensures that users can operate the tool intuitively, while the underlying VBA logic handles all parsing, validation, and transformation tasks.
